Q: You're stuck on an island and can only bring one hair product. Which one would you bring and why?

Sabrina: “My desert island product would be the Frizz Block. My hair is fairly fine, so I don't like to weigh it down with heavy products, but I also have to deal with frizz. I love that the Frizz Block takes care of the frizz without adding weight. Plus, I can layer it on top of other products, which helps to seal them in, so I get to enjoy the benefits of those products for longer.”

Q: What is a big misconception people often have about hair care that you need to address?

Sabrina: “One major misconception involves dealing with frizz. Many people, especially in the South, assume that creams, oils, or serums are the only solutions for frizz. These emollient products provide a temporary fix and often just reduce the frizz a bit, but don’t fully address the problem.

What you actually need is a product with hold, like a gel or mousse. These products contain polymers that wrap around each hair strand, creating a barrier against humidity. This barrier helps to prevent frizz and seals in the products you applied earlier.

A lot of people avoid mousse because they fear it will make their hair crispy or crunchy. However, it’s not the product that causes this, but rather how and when it’s applied. The key is to use mousse or gel as the final step in your hair care routine. After applying your emollient products, distribute the mousse or gel evenly on damp hair, ensuring you keep some water in your hair to dilute the product. This technique helps avoid crunchiness while keeping your hair soft and frizz-free.

Another common misconception is about haircuts. Many believe that thin hair can’t have layers, and thick hair must have layers. This isn’t necessarily true. For thick hair, we can work with the hair's density internally without adding multiple layers. For fine hair, superficial cutting can create movement and volume without sacrificing density. Understanding how to work with your hair’s density is key to achieving the best cut.”

We hope these insights help you better understand how to tackle common hair care issues and make more informed decisions about your products and haircuts. Stay tuned for more expert tips and advice from our talented team at Kate Kandel Salon!
